  • X11 forwarding over SSH

I’ve used ssh on my home network for quite some time in mostly simple ways for mostly simple reasons – mainly for software updates, manual configuration, etc.

I’ve looked a little into remote desktop stuff, mostly for fun, but haven’t taken the time to really grasp all the details.  I did come across a most useful bit, however, that’s really easy to remember:

    ssh -X remotehost

Of course, as you are well aware, this simply forwards X11 requests over the SSH connection.  I must have missed the simplicity of this option in the past, since it’s so easy and so useful.  Had I only known!  My life would have been so much easier…

Well, not really.  However, it has solved a question I’ve had about controlling music playing on a media PC from another machine using Exaile.  Not a perfect solution, but almost. compare hotel prices .
