{"id":858,"date":"2009-02-10T12:20:37","date_gmt":"2009-02-10T17:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.facemyer.net\/?p=1"},"modified":"2009-02-10T12:20:37","modified_gmt":"2009-02-10T17:20:37","slug":"flossify","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.facemyer.net\/?p=858","title":{"rendered":"FLOSSIFY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"flossify at work\" src=\"http:\/\/en.flossmanuals.net\/floss\/pub\/Blog\/flossify2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"237\" \/>I was invited to attend the first &#8220;FLOSSIFY&#8221; last weekend.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only was it a fantastic experience of collaboration between like-minded people, it was a great opportunity to realize once more why I don&#8217;t like big cities.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not the point.<\/p>\n<p>This collaborative effort was hosted (collaboratively, no less) by <a href=\"http:\/\/eyebeam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eyebeam<\/a> in NYC, which provided the space and equipment and some of the manpower, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.flossmanuals.net\" target=\"_blank\">FLOSS Manuals<\/a>, which provided the web framework for manual writing as well as the dynamic expertise of Adam Hyde.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of FLOSSIFY is to rewrite books which explain or make use of non-free software, replacing the references with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_and_open_source_software\" target=\"_blank\">FLOSS<\/a> examples.\u00c2\u00a0 At this first event, we reworked <a href=\"http:\/\/digital-foundations.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Digital Foundations<\/a>, a fairly simple and nicely laid out book about computer graphic design principles.<\/p>\n<p>I think one of the important aspects of choosing free software over non-free is often missed &#8211; that is, free software helps to create a culture, both within and without the world of technology, that is focused on being better rather than being profitable.\u00c2\u00a0 Free software enables the use of open standards that help create which is accessible by anyone, not just those who have bought a particular popular (expensive) piece of software.\u00c2\u00a0 It is also frequently as good or better in many respects than that which is available commercially.\u00c2\u00a0 Fruitful collaboration in Open Source projects enables many ideas to penetrate the work, increasing creativity; also, it can help build relationships in unique and beneficial ways.<\/p>\n<p>While it is difficult for many people to break free from the concept that bought software must be better, I am encouraged by the rise of such projects as FLOSS Manuals and &#8220;FLOSSIFY&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope people will become increasingly open to better alternatives in software and data structures so that the effort of free software can continue to grow dramatically and improve the face of technology for us all.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in the progress of the first &#8220;FLOSSIFY&#8221; event (it is at this writing almost complete), you can see the book <a href=\"http:\/\/en.flossmanuals.net\/digitalfoundations\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 You can also get more of an inside look at the event on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.flossmanuals.net\/about\" target=\"_blank\">FM blog<\/a>. <A title=\"music cloud\" HREF=\"http:\/\/www.deenes.xyz\" style=\"text-decoration:none;color: inherit !important;\" >sap cloud<\/A> <A style=\"color: inherit !important;\" TITLE=\"\" href=\"\" ><\/A> . <a style='color: inherit !important;' TITLE='' HREF='' ><\/a> . <a title=\"Peta satelit dunia\" href=\"http:\/\/petadunia.info\" style=\"color: inherit !important;\" >Peta satelit dunia<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was invited to attend the first &#8220;FLOSSIFY&#8221; last weekend.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only was it a fantastic experience of collaboration between like-minded people, it was a great opportunity to realize once more why I don&#8217;t like big cities.\u00c2\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not the point.
